Homemade Hamburger Helper

  • 1 lb of ground beef (or use smoked sausage as an alternative)
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 1/2 cups of beef broth
  • 1 1/2 cups of milk
  • 16 oz. box of elbow noodles
  • (1) 8 oz can of tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp each of paprika and parsley flakes
  • 1/2 tsp each of salt and pepper
  • 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper
  • 1 TBSP of garlic powder
  • 1 TBSP of onion powder
  • 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese


  • Heat a saucepan or cast-iron skillet with oil
  • Brown ground beef with chopped onion
  • Season with salt, pepper, paprika, parsley, cayenne, garlic powder and onion powder
  • Add beef broth, tomato sauce, noodles, and milk to the skillet
  • Bring everything to a boil and turn heat down to low
  • Cover with a lid and cook for about 10 minutes stirring to keep the noodles from sticking
  • Once noodles are cooked and tender, add cheese, stir, and serve
